This is a custom wound source coil to replace the obsolete Yamaha part number 8G8-85511-20-00 found on all gas G1 & G3 models (1979-1989). Made in USA with domestic and imported components. Basic instructions are included in package.
Testing your source coil is fairly straightforward. First find the magneto wire bullet connectors underneath & in front of the air filter. Unplug the brown wire & connect the red lead of your multimeter to the brown wire leading into the engine. Connect the black lead of your multimeter to a metal piece of the engine, such as the crankcase. Set your multimeter to resistance (Ω). You should see about 350 Ω at room temperature. Readings between 300Ω and 400Ω are generally fine. Now set your multimeter to A/C Voltage and crank the engine. You should see about 50 to 60 volts at a steady cranking speed. If your readings aren't similar to these, you may have a bad source coil or faulty wiring.
